In 2016, Donald Trump defied political norms with his unconventional campaign style, securing the U.S. presidency and unleashing what became known as the "Trump Shock." Trump’s disruptive approach ignited U.S.-China trade tensions and triggered profound shifts in global economic and political landscapes. Now, in 2025, "Trump Shock 2.0" has returned, driven by the "Make America Great Again" (MAGA), escalating global tariff wars, and treating economic competition as a form of warfare. The result? A dramatic geopolitical shift, heightened risks of supply chain restructuring, and an atmosphere of uncertainty rippling through global markets. The U.S.'s policy shift on Ukraine, withdrawal from the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement), and plans for Gaza reconstruction have further eroded its international credibility. However, these moves have also united the European Union, Canada, and Middle Eastern countries. The European Summit resolved to emphasize sovereignty, significantly increase security and defense spending, and form a "voluntary coalition" to ensure Ukraine's safety. Meanwhile, Canada, fueled by patriotic sentiment, initiated a boycott of American goods, and Arab nations insisted on leading Gaza's reconstruction efforts. As a strategic hub in geopolitics, global supply chains, and the semiconductor and AI industries, Taiwan finds itself at the center of this evolving global landscape. Amid escalating tensions, Trump accused Taiwan of "stealing" U.S. semiconductor technology and threatened higher tariffs. Meanwhile, Taiwan's trade surplus with the U.S. soared to $73.9 billion in 2024-a 55% increase, ranking sixth worldwide. However, in a dramatic turn of events, TSMC Chairman Mark Liu and President Trump jointly announced a $100 billion investment expansion in the U.S. on March 3. While this fueled skepticism about U.S.-Taiwan relations, it ultimately led Trump to shift his tone, acknowledging Taiwan’s critical role in global technology and supply chains. Amid unilateralism and geopolitical turbulence, Taiwan's government must adopt strategies such as economic diversification, diplomatic flexibility, and defense and security cooperation to navigate the complexities. At the same time, businesses need to diversify supply chains and markets, monitor currency and interest rate fluctuations, drive digital transformation and efficiency, invest in sustainability, and strengthen strategic partnerships to enhance resilience and adaptability. "Team Taiwan" emphasizes Taiwan as a united team confronting the new global landscape. In contrast, media debates over "Chinese Taipei" versus "Taiwan Team" are meaningless. In today's volatile international and market environment, "a lone warrior" approach cannot provide effective solutions-only unity and collaboration can overcome the challenges ahead.
