The 2021 United Nations Climate Summit (COP26) resolution has allowed governments and companies around the world to confirm net-zero progress goals. In 2024, the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the UA Clean Competition Act (CCA), and the EU’s Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR), etc., all use legislation to drive companies' practical actions in achieving sustainable development goals. At the same time, Earth Day will announce the draft of the "Global Plastics Pact" at the end of 2024, which will reduce carbon and plastic reduction. It has become the most critical issue for future development of the printing and packaging industry. How is the printing and packaging industry moving towards Sustainability? It is the theme of the entire drupa 24 exhibition. We see the use of AI, including automation technology to improve efficiency and waste reduction of energy and resources. There are also environmentally friendly inks (water-based, UV, plant-based inks, etc.), recycling Environmentally friendly materials, such as paper, biodegradable and plastic-reducing operation with a circular economy mindset, and cooperation between strategic partners and customers to stimulate more creativity and effects. Of the 14 seminars in TIGAX 2024, 7 were related to sustainable development, including Prof. Lu Zhizhong, CLC, Cymmetrik, YFY Jupiter, China Pulp, and Sun-shi Printing. All of them covered many practical experiences and examples of sustainable development. In Taiwan, the printing and packaging industry with lean management will definitely grow by achieving sustainable development. HP, Ricoh, FUJIFILM, etc. also mentioned that automating the digital printing process is a must to meet the low-carbon and energy-saving requirements. Transparency and openness are essential to achieve sustainable development, such as certification of relevant materials, environmental management, energy traceability, resource used (including carbon emissions), calculation of product carbon footprints, and the related reports (ESG, CSR), etc. It’s how we will win the trust of customers and business partners. Achieving the sustainable development goal is a challenge and an opportunity for the printing and packaging industry.

Platform Economics is a new business model that connects people, organizations, and resources through the Internet and digital technology. It promotes the transaction of goods or services and forms an interactive ecological network to create the endless stream of benefits. Amazon, Alibaba, Apple, Google, Netflix, Uber, Facebook, Airbnb, Spotify, etc. have all risen as a result, such as Cimpress, Gain How Printing, etc. in the printing and packaging industry. The exhibition itself is also a platform economy. In addition to connecting the supply chain, it is also valuable to discuss the technology, equipment, materials, and the environment in order to gain insights of the market trends and opportunities. This has made a great contribution to the development of the printing and packaging industry. The drupa exhibition, with 170,000 visitors from 174 countries, contributed at least US$350 million to the local economy in Germany. The platform economy is also one of the digital transformation models in the printing and packaging industry. drupa 2024 focuses on platform economy as one of the focus topics, and it calls on the younger generation and entrepreneurs for the drupa theme: Internet and New Business Platform for the Next Era. They gather with the senior generation and participate in the drupa at the DNA forum to discuss new business models, new materials, artificial intelligence, remote services, process design, etc. At the drupa exhibition, OEMs demonstrate solutions to support customers in integrating production, quality, maintenance, and fault reporting system. They also provide remote diagnosis, troubleshooting, parts replacement suggestions, etc., and can manage orders and customer service. Printing and packaging Industry venders develop supply chain services and provide online features, such as design, order processing, color management, production information transparency, logistics distribution, and customization, which have become corporate‘s competitiveness. Enterprise development platform service is an aspect of digital transformation. It is a necessary way forward, especially when facing the international market.

What is the future of print? It is a topic with divergent opinions. WhatTheyThink once mentioned that the future of print will be integrated process and engaged in communication media services. Printing is a model of business provider that serves different customers. Printing is a comprehensive manufacturing industry that focuses on sustainability and diversified services. Printing is a trade service organization that meets market and customer needs. The conclusion is that the printing industry is a service provider that satisfies its customers. The road to drupa brings together OEMs, material suppliers, brands, designers, experts, printing and packaging leaders, and other service providers in different fields from all around the world. Through Forums and exhibition interaction, we discuss industry trends, technology development, innovative applications, business models, solutions, and other related topics to jointly create the future of the printing and packaging industry. Looking back at the drupa 2016, traditional graphic arts and packaging printing have expanded to industrial, decoration, and functional printing with rapid development of digital printing technology. In the meantime, the printing substates have expanded from paper, cardboard, plastic to industrial materials. Frank Romano, RIT professor from the United States, believes that this is the beginning of a new printing era. Digital technology and related solutions are the main drivers. Cross-field development and a comprehensive service platform that meet customer’s needs will become the main business model in the new printing era. “We create the future”is the theme of drupa 2024. The focal topics are sustainable development, circular economy, digitalization, artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation technology. These trends will influence the value of the future industry. Through the exhibition and forums, people will experience the diversified services of new technologies innovation beyond printing that makes drupa a pilgrimage for the printing and packaging industry. “Printing is a sentimental and timeless venture, that makes beautiful memories last forever.”In the new digital era, we need a new generation with courage to start businesses and accelerate transformation that leads the industry to grow and develop continuously in the future.

“We Create the Future” is the theme of drupa 2024.The focus topics are Sustainability, Circular Economy, Resource and Energy Efficiency, Recycle, Digitalization, Printing 4.0, Finishing 4.0, Artificial Intelligence, Platform Economy, and Connectivity. To put it simply, Create the Future refers to digitalization and sustainability, which are significant to the future development of the printing and packaging industry. Digitization is imperative to initiate innovation and efficiency. Digital printing has changed the pattern of the printing and packaging industry. It brings the products and consumers closer and makes brands more influential. Through on-demand, short-run, personalized printing, smart packaging, etc.,it is obvious that the quality and efficiency of digital printing have caught up with offset printing. The future competition between the two is on the return on investment. At drupa, traditional printing and finishing equipment manufacturers, focus on optimizing the production process.By using AI and automation, improving quality and efficiency are the objectives alone with Industry 4.0. Regarding supply chain service system, online ordering, production process control, warehouse logistics, and MIS provide services over the air. It is a result of digitalization. Surely, artificial intelligence also takes partsin. Global warming issue has driven brands to set the carbon reduction and neutralization targets. The supply chains have to seek for solutions comprehensively. Printing and packaging companies are no exception. In response to marine pollution, Greenpeace launched “Alliance to End Plastic Waste”in 2016.The United Nations will publish “Global Plastics Treaty” in 2024. These are legally binding plastic reduction targets. Therefore, energy conservation, carbon reduction, and circular economy issues have become the focus topics of drupa 2024. The EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism(CBAM) will be officially implemented in 2026 and carbon taxes will take effect globally. Carbon reduction, carbon footprints, and carbon trading affect the global competitiveness of governments and enterprises. The EU’s Deforestation Regulation(EUDR) will start to apply on December 30, 2024. The list of products includes: palm oil, cattle, wood, coffee, cocoa, rubber, soy, and the derivatives of those products, such as, chocolate, furniture, and printed paper. Traders will have to prove that the products are deforestation-free. For sure, it includes printed packaging products and there are high demands on FSC certification recently. In the future, companies must continue to endorse digitalization and sustainable development. Printing and packaging companies are no exception.
